Excellent news, Philadelphia: the city’s coming-soon bike share program has a name, a title sponsor and is nearly ready to roll.

Today, the City of Philadelphia announced Independence Blue Cross as the title sponsor of the Philadelphia bike share program and, as a tribute to the dollars Independence Blue Cross is investing, the bike share program has a brand-new name.

Indego is what Philly’s bike share system will be called, and the new program will become a reality this spring.

Excited? So are we.

Not only is bike sharing a healthy and affordable public transportation alternative, the new Philadelphia program will also serve to raise the city’s status as a cosmopolitain destination and connect Philadelphia’s residents and visitors to the city’s streets in a new, accessible way.

The Indego bikes will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will serve a geographic area from the Delaware River, across the Schuylkill River, into West Philadelphia and from the Navy Yard to North Philadelphia, including Temple University’s main campus.

The Indego system will launch in a few phases, initially with the first 60 stations in Center City and parts of North, South and West Philadelphia. An expansion of the system is already in the works, too, for spring 2016 with an additional 60 stations.

Detailed pricing will be announced in March, but riders can expect the system to be low cost and efficient for both residents and visitors, with lots of options for ways to ride.

Let’s get rolling.
